The first ‘public erasure’ of this body of work is to draw attention to the loss of species worldwide and how it affects our ecosystem.
‘Public Erasure - Beachcomber Beetle’
RA Summer Exhibition 2022 Bill Woodrow selection Gallery 1
Occurs on the strandlines of beaches edged by sand dunes. It was last recorded on Saunton Sands (Braunton Burrows) in 2002 and may now be extinct in Devon and therefore in England. There are colonies of the beetle in South Wales, although apparently declining here and is now limited to seven localities. The removal and use of driftwood for beach fires and beach cleaning are a likely cause for its demise. Plans to reintroduce this species in Saunton Sands are a possibility.
